Ronald Reagan was shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington DC where he had been addressing a union convention. He escaped serious injury.
16 YEARS AGO (2002)
The Queen Mother died peacefully in her sleep, aged 101 after suffering from a prolonged cold. Her death prompted a huge outpouring of national grief and an estimated 200,000 people filed past her coffin as she lay in state at Westminster Hall at the Palace of Westminster.
