A WIDOW has been reunited with a love letter she wrote to her soldier sweetheart 57 years ago – after it was found in an army surplus store.

Maureen Dubberley, now 75, was 19 when she sent the note telling Colin of her undying love as he carried out National Service in the Caribbean in 1961.

He put it in the pocket of his fatigues, where it stayed when his service ended in 1962.

The couple wed in 1963 and went on to have three kids and four grandchildren. Colin died in 2000.

Now Maureen has had a heart- warming reminder of their young love after the trousers turned up in an army surplus store – with the note still in them. In it she told Colin: “I love you my darling and I always will... The letter I wait for most is to say, ‘I am coming home’.”

Lee Money, 57, who bought the trousers, was so touched by the note he tracked Maureen down to reunite her with it.

Maureen of Halesowen, West Mids, said: “It brought back a lot of memories. It’s as if I could have written it yesterday. It’s a lovely surprise to be reunited with it.

“Where these trousers have been all these years, God knows.”

Colin, who served in the Worcestershire Regiment, was sent to British Honduras, now Belize, to help with the clean-up operation after devastating Hurricane Hattie.
