Wi are we ripped off for internet?
Surely it’s a given now that access to wi-fi is essential for participation in our fast-changing world?
I pondered this question as I sat muttering to myself on a Virgin Trains journey to Leeds on Tuesday. Not because the fare was TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY FOUR pounds return, but because, as it was a standard class ticket, there was only 15 minutes free wi-fi. Thereafter a charge of at least £5 was applied with a lot of faffing around to obtain codes and key them in, followed by too much anger-inducing time waiting for it to actually work.
It’s a process that makes me so mad, I mostly give up and want to punch Richard Branson. It’s not like everyone in ‘standard’ class is posting selfies – some of us need online access to work. Over £250 for a return journey time of five hours. That’s more than £50 an hour, with no free – essential – wi-fi and, worse, crap red wine. Unforgivable.
