New Zealand has produced many sporting legends, but Joseph Parker’s promoter claims he will top them if he becomes undisputed world heavyweight champion.

WBO king Parker can take the next step towards sporting immortality against Anthony Joshua tonight and promoter David Higgins says he is destined for greatness.

“Joseph was the mostGoogled New Zealander a couple of years ago, more than any All Black, more than the World-Cup-winning All Black captain, more than the Prime Minister,” said Higgins.

“He’s already one of the mostprominent people in New Zealand sport and if he unifies the belts and goes on to become the undisputed world champion, he could be the greatest figure in New Zealand sporting history.” Higgins insists that is no idle boast because succeeding in the Cinderella sport of boxing in New Zealand is much tougher than getting to the top in rugby or cricket. “Look, how many countries are good at rugby?” he argued. “New Zealand and South Africa, Ireland, not a huge number. “Boxing is an Olympic sport with over 100 countries competing, so you have to take that into account. “Then you consider the fact that New Zealand has no boxing heritage and therefore no funding – that makes Joseph’s achievements all the more remarkable.”
