NEEDLES FIND NEAR VILLAGE
NEEDLES found at the athletes’ village have sparked a probe by Commonwealth Games bosses.
The Indian team revealed that a bottle containing syringes was discovered by a cleaner on a path near their accommodation.
“One of my guys reported that to us,” said team manager Ajay Narang. “I had a look and could see these were syringes.” Games organisers have a zerotolerance stance on doping and a “no-needle” policy applies to athletes, unless they have a medical exemption.
Aussie anti-doping chiefs took statements from medical and athlete representatives.
Peter Beattie, head of the Gold Coast organising committee, vowed last week that these Games would be a “cheat-free zone”.
