May ‘has no desire to lift lives of poor’

- BY MIKEY SMITH Political Reporter

THERESA May’s failure to pick a new social mobility tsar shows her disregard for improving the poor’s lives, an MP says.

Former Labour Health Secretary Alan Milburn quit as chairman of the PM’s Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission in December, believing Mrs May’s pledge to build a fairer Britain was all talk.

Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner was also critical. She said: “The Social Mobility Commission sitting empty for four months is one sign of their utter disregard for the life chances of those from low and middle income backgrounds.”

Some believe ministers do not want to pick anyone who may criticise the Government’s record.
