Unions back passport deal battle
UNIONS last night backed De La Rue’s legal fight to produce our blue post-Brexit passport.
The firm will take ministers to court over plans to hand Franco-Dutch firm Gemalto a £490million deal to make them.
Hundreds of thousands have signed petitions urging the Government to reconsider.
Gemalto allegedly undercut its UK rival by £120million.
Downing Street confirmed a two-week extension on the bidding but said Gemalto is still the preferred bidder. De La Rue said: “We confirm we are taking the first steps towards initiating appeal proceedings.”
Unite’s Louisa Bull said: “Our current passports are technically secure to a high standard and need to remain so. De La Rue makes a quality product.”
