C4 Bake Off takes biscuit

- IANHYLAND

Major disappointment in the series finale of The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off last night.

They had a custard pie round and not one celebrity contestant shoved theirs in Paul Hollywood’s face.

Paul got pied in the end thanks to some pre-planned slapstick from Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding – but it would have been much more satisfying had Alan Carr or Aisling Bea surprised him for real.

That was my only complaint about this entire series, though. Well, apart from the fact Channel 4 didn’t make enough episodes.

These celebrity specials will surely go down as the month newcomers Noel, Sandi and Prue Leith really made Bake Off their own. This may sound like sacrilege but I have now reached the stage where I can genuinely say I don’t miss Mary Berry, or Mel and Sue.

As for the highlight of the series, top marks to Alan Carr for making a late bid with his “even the bin spat it out” line last night.

But nothing could ever beat Nick “you try filling a biscuit” Hewer presenting his choux showstopper to the judges in Week 2 with this advice: “I urge you not to eat it.”

I have reached the stage where I can say I don’t miss Mary
