LESS GETS MORE FROM WILKIN

- BY GARETH WALKER

ST HELENS coach Justin Holbrook says a change in role, not in captaincy, has been behind Jon Wilkin’s return to form this season.

Wilkin – who made his 400th appearance for the club in Good Friday’s win over Wigan – was replaced as skipper by James Roby before the start of the campaign.

But his coach insists giving him shorter spells is the reason for his recent performances. “I don’t think taking the captaincy away has changed him because he’s still a leader in the group on and off the field,” said Holbrook.

“But I said all pre-season that reduced game-time minutes would improve him. We’re getting quality rather than quantity out of him, and have simplified his game a bit.

“I said at the start of the season I thought he was in for a great year – and he’s been fantastic.”
