KOMPANY THIS ISN’T OVER... NOT ONE PERSON AT CITY THINKS THIS TIE IS OVER

‘If we need to score five so be it. We can dominate like the second half, that’s what keeps us believing’

VINCENT KOMPANY admitted Manchester City have a mountain to climb to turn around their Champions League tie with Liverpool.

But the City skipper said Pep Guardiola (right) and his side have “unfinished business” in the return leg and believes they can still go through against all the odds.

City, who can seal the Premier League title with victory in tomorrow’s Manchester derby, were routed 3-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s rampant side.

The humiliating defeat has left the Blues needing to stage an epic comeback in Tuesday’s return leg to keep alive their Champions League hopes. But Kompany said City, who beat Liverpool 5-0 at home earlier this season, are convinced they can pull off a stunning comeback.

And for Kompany the return leg is bigger than the chance to clinch the title against local rivals Manchester United, given it is one shot at European glory.

“We’ve got one chance to do it in the Champions League,” said Kompany.

“In the Premier League we’ve got plenty of opportunities to do the job. Whatever happens on Saturday, we’ll take the game extremely seriously and we know how important it is for our fans. But after that we’ll go back to the unfinished business we have got here.

“There’s not one person at City who believes this game is over, not one. We have to live with the consequences of this result, but that’s what makes football special.

“We had a very short period of time where everything went wrong, but the same can happen in the next game for the opposition. That’s what keeps us believing we can create chances. We can dominate like we dominated the second half at Anfield.

“Conceding one goal is not the end of the world in a two-legged tie and we knew that and should have kept it at that.

“But within very little time you find yourself climbing a mountain before you’ve even gone halfway in the tie, and that shouldn’t happen.”

City failed to register a shot in target in the first leg – a remarkable stat for a side lauded for their attacking prowess and goal threat this season.

Despite that chastening scenario, Kompany is convinced City can produce the necessary firepower to score the glut of goals they will need to progress. “I take a lot of confidence out of how we finished the game,” said Kompany. “We got in their box a lot of times, we just didn’t manage to be as effective as we usually are. But I’m confident the same mistakes won’t happen.

“If we need to score five, so be it. We’ve prided ourselves all season on being the team that we are.

“I’ve been in many games at Anfield where for 90 minutes you don’t get out of your own half and it wasn’t like that. Just that for a very short period we threw a lot away.” Kompany admitted City’s fans, who have been slow to embrace the Champions League in recent seasons, must be in full voice next Tuesday.

“It’s everything and I’ve seen it happen,” he added.

“Big games, big nights, they’ve always shown up and this will be one of them. Now we’ve got to do it the hard way and the fans have got a massive role to play.”
