The Treasury has netted a £1.2billion windfall from selling airwaves for new 5G mobile services. Mobile giants EE, Vodafone, snapped O2 and Three up “spectrum” needed groundbreaking for a host of technologies. As well internet speeds as faster on smartphones, 5G will everything from also allow driverless cars to “smart” bins to become rubbish a reality. It is being tested places, including in a few London’s O2 Arena where comedian Michael McIntyre is set to play seven dates this autumn. Mobile giant O2 also paid £200million for spectrum to boost existing 4G services in the auction run by regulator Ofcom. The total £1.35bn raised from the sell-off is more than predicted – but a fraction of the £22bn paid by operators for 3G airwaves.
