Jarvis roots for trees in city streets
JARVIS Cocker returned to his home city for a demo against the “crazy” felling of thousands of trees.
The Pulp frontman, 54, joined hundreds of people protesting a council scheme to replace half of Sheffield’s 36,000 mature specimens with saplings.
He told the crowd on Saturday: “I salute you. It has made me feel very proud of Sheffield.”
BBC Countryfile’s Rob McBride dubbed it “the worst case of urban tree destruction on the planet”.
Contractor Amey is doing the work as part of a Sheffield Council roads improvement scheme.
It claims the trees are dead, diseased or in the way. Protestors disagree.
The council has halted the felling until a safety review is carried out.
