CITY fatcats have bet nearly £3billion on Britain’s high street crisis worsening.

INVESTORS borrow shares in a given company from someone who owns them.

The stock is immediatel­y sold on the open market. The investor is gambling on the share price falling – perhaps they think the firm is overvalued or has tough times ahead.

If this happens, the investor buys the stock
