■This is my mam Dora Herman, left, with her friend Annie when she was in the Royal Flying Corps in Winchester. She enrolled in 1917, aged 21, and worked in the canteen. I know she found it hard when the airmen were missing at meal times, having been lost in battle. By the time she was demobbed at 23, the Royal Flying Corps had become the RAF.
