MILLER DELIVERS HAMMER SMASH AND GRAB
NICK MILLER smashed a Commonwealth Games record with his hammer yesterday.
The burly Cumbrian became the first Briton to throw 80 metres en route to winning hammer gold and shattering the 12-year-old Games mark by 2.73m. His joy was matched by Emily Godley, who won weightlifting gold with her final lift – and England basketball star Georgia Jones.
Jones had helped her team beat Mozambique before watching boyfriend Jamell Anderson in action for the men’s side in victory over Cameroon. As the game finished the men formed a huddle before breaking up to reveal Anderson on one knee, holding an engagement ring. “Basketball is such a big part of our lives so the Commonwealth Games seemed the perfect place to propose,” he said. And she said yes. In the pool Adam Peaty qualified fastest for today’s 50m breaststroke final. Asha Philip did likewise on the track, quickest into the final of the women’s 100m.
Adam Gemili will take on Jamaica’s Yohan Blake in the men’s 100m final – though he clutched his hip as he finished his semi-final.
