1983: Jenny Pitman became the first woman trainer to saddle a Grand National winner when 13-1 shot Corbiere, ridden by Ben de Haan, won at Aintree.

1988: Alan Shearer, then a Southampto­n player, became the youngest person, at 17 years and 240 days, to score a top-flight hat-trick, against Arsenal.

2001: Coventry striker John Aloisi (above) scored six goals as Australia beat Tonga by a record 22-0 in an Oceania World Cup qualifier.

2006: American Phil Mickelson won the Masters for the second time in three years.
