THERESA May refused to rule out military action against Syria as she slammed a “barbaric” chemical attack that killed 70 people, including children.

The Prime Minister left the door open to joining strikes against president Bashar al-Assad’s forces as US President Donald Trump said “major decisions” about a response would be made within 24 hours.

He said: “We’ll figure out if it’s Russia, if it’s Syria, if it’s Iran or if it’s all of them together.”

Mr Trump added: “Everybody’s going to pay a price.”

Videos shot by rescue workers showed men, women and children foaming at the mouth after the suspected chlorine or sarin gas attack in the formerly rebel-held town of Douma on Saturday.

Mrs May said: “If this is at the hands of the Assad regime... it must be held to account – and its backers must be held to account too.”

She urged Russia to back a probe into the attack, saying UN vetoes by Vladimir Putin’s regime had allowed international laws on chemical weapons use to be broken.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said no evidence had been found of a chemical attack.

The UN Security Council met to discuss the claims last night, hours after a deadly attack on a Syrian airbase near the city of Homs, which Russia and Syria blamed on Israel.
