Two dead, 50 injured and three Brits critical after Malta crash
THREE Brits were fighting for their lives last night after an open-topped tourist bus crashed into a tree in Malta, killing two people.
Fifty people were injured in the collision in the town of Zurrieq.
Six people were left in a critical condition – three of them Brits, two children, aged six and eight, plus a 44-year-old man. A 72-year-old Italian woman, a 31-year-old German woman and a 35-year-old were also critical.
A dozen of those injured were children, according to authorities.
The two who died. a 62-year-old Belgian man and a 37-year-old Spanish woman, were on top of the vehicle when it hit tree branches.
Casualties had to be winched from the roof by cranes. The 24-year-old driver was on his first day in the job, local reports said.
Chris Fearne, Malta’s Minister for Health, revealed most injuries were to the head and neck areas.
He added the sightseers were mainly from Britain and Belgium.
The Foreign Office said: “We are urgently seeking more information.”
