Diehard Davies is a spin Doctor
Former Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies has admitted he was wrong to doubt the casting of a female Time Lord.
The Welshman, who oversaw the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras of the BBC drama after bringing it back in 2005, previously said he would not have cast a female Doctor.
But now he concedes he was wrong, and is looking forward to seeing Jodie Whittaker appear as the 13th Time Lord from October.
Speaking in 2006, Davies said: “I wouldn’t cast a female Doctor. I think it would pose too many awkward questions.
“I’d be worried for the parents, having to tell their children why a man has become a woman, and how they would explain it to them and how it would work in real life.”
Now he explains: “Some of us might be worried. I worried, out loud, in print.
“But that was 13 years ago. I’ve grown up, and learnt, and I know better, and the world has grown up, too.”
