Nearly three-quarters of drivers admit they have made common mistakes which could invalidate their insurance.

New research from pay-as-you-go insurer Cuvva reveals that 15 million motorists risk hefty bills as two in five have eaten while driving and one in six has driven in flip flops or barefoot.

While not illegal, in the event of a crash these could void an insurance policy if deemed to be the cause of an accident.

A further one in five has driven with an unrestrained pet in the front seat. This is illegal and, as well as invalidating insurance, can carry fines up to £2,500.

Average insurance claims hit a record £2,936 last year and motorists could end up thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Freddy Macnamara, CEO and founder of Cuvva, said: “The insurance industry needs to start educating drivers. Some slip-ups seem innocent but can be met with crippling fines and penalty points.”
