Today’s photograph shows the crowded decks during a drill on board a British troop ship carrying soldiers to Norway following the German invasion. The Allied Expeditionary Force, numbering around 38,000 mainly British and French troops, were sent to shore up Norwegian resistance to the Nazi war machine, but were forced to withdraw when Hitler invaded France in May 1940.
