Corbyn: We need a fresh approach to end violence
JEREMY Corbyn called for a new approach to soaring violence on our streets as he launched a bid to tackle knife and gun crime.
The Labour leader urged a “serious examination” of the prison and youth justice system as he blasted the “very high rate of re-offending”.
He said: “Tackling this requires urgent action and fresh thinking. To do this, we must urgently listen to the communities affected and those on the front line.
“Ending damaging Tory cuts to police numbers and putting more officers on our streets is only part of the solution. We must also learn from other initiatives that work.”
Mr Corbyn pointed to the success of Glasgow in cutting knife crime by integrating the work of police, education, health and other public services.
Campaigners, police and MPs joined his summit.
They included Aydarus Ahmed, praised for calming community fears after son Mohamed Abdullahi was stabbed to death in 2013, aged 20, in a case of mistaken identity in Holloway, North London.
