Hero tells his war story at the age of 97

- BY RICHARD JENKINS

RAF war hero Humphrey Phillips has become a published author, aged 97.

Former Flight Lieutenant Humphrey, who flew in Lancaster bombers and won the Distinguished Flying Cross, began his memoirs in 2003 to ease the pain of losing wife Iris.

A Thousand and One tells of the flight engineer’s missions over Germany and a vital role as a trainer.

It describes how enemy fire riddled his aircraft, nearly killing the gunner and forcing an emergency landing back in Britain.

The title refers to Humphrey being the “one” who took part in famous 1,000-bomber raids.

After finishing the book at his North London care home he said: “You could say it’s been nearly 100 years in the making.”
