Johnstone is keen to quit United

- BY JAMES NURSEY

SAM JOHNSTONE is ready to quit Manchester United this summer as he sees no way past David de Gea.

The former England Under-20 shot-stopper has excelled on loan at Championship promotion hopefuls Aston Villa and he produced a series of vital saves in their televised 1-0 win over rivals Cardiff.

Now he is hoping to help Villa secure promotion and land a permanent move as he has just a year left on his United deal.

Johnstone, 25, has been at Old Trafford since he was 10 but is yet to make his first team debut and thinks De Gea, 27, is untouchable.

Johnstone, who initially joined Villa in January 2017, said: “He is the best goalkeeper in the world.

“At United I would watch him every day. He’s not much older than me but you just pick things up. He’s very calm – but his biggest quality is his shot-stopping, which is unbelievable.

“It’s tough to break in at a club like Man United. I’ve been there since I was 10 years old but I was happy to play last year for Villa and get a full season this year.

“I’m enjoying football. Hopefully I will do my job, help the club get promoted and see what happens.”
