Ronaldo to the rescue for Real

-

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S penalty eight minutes into stoppage time sent Madrid into the semi-finals on a night of high drama at the Bernabeu.

With Barcelona having surrendered a three-goal lead the previous night, it took 76 seconds for the prospect of another Champions League shock to start brewing.

Sami Khedira curled a cross to the back post where a Mario Mandzukic stretched to thump a header past Keylor Navas and give Juventus hope.

Gonzalo Higuain was denied by Navas, Gianluigi Buffon saved from Gareth Bale and Isco had an effort ruled offside. Mandzukic struck again on 37 minutes, heading past Navas. On the hour Blaise Matuidi levelled the tie when Navas fumbled.

As the game headed for extra-time, ref Michael Oliver gave a penalty for Mehdi Benatia’s challenge on Lucas Vazquez, and Buffon was sent off for dissent. Ronaldo made no mistake.
