RUBEN SPOILING FOR A FIGHT

- BY JAMES NURSEY

RUBEN NEVES insists swapping the Champions League for the Championship has made him a better player.

The Portugal midfielder has been a driving force behind Wolves’s march to the Premier League.

Wanderers will be promoted this weekend if they beat Birmingham on Sunday or Fulham fail to beat Brentford tomorrow.

Neves (right) scored his sixth goal of the season, all from outside the box, with a breathtaking volley in the 2-0 win over Derby on Wednesday. Last summer’s £16.8million signing from Porto, who styles himself on Andrea Pirlo, has more than lived up to his price-tag following the shock move.

Neves, 21, nominated for EFL player of the year, said: “I came to a very good project and to improve my game, and there is nowhere better to do that than in this league. I’ve improved the defensive side of my game because at Porto the games were more with the ball.

“Here we have more contact, more fighting. Honestly, I love these kind of games in the Championship.”
