There are many reasons why I hope Salisbury poisoning victim Sergei Skripal recovers from the attack and goes on to lead a healthy life. The main one being that whenever a photo of him is released he is seen clutching a pint of strong lager.

As someone who is fond of that particular beverage I would dearly love experts to claim that it was six pints of San Miguel every night that made the 66-year-old’s body strong enough to see off the deadly Novichok, thus shutting up the booze fascists who say drinking more than a couple of “units” a day will make you keel over and die.
