PEP: REDS SAW RED OVER VAR

- BY DAVID McDONNELL and JOHN CROSS

PEP GUARDIOLA claims Manchester United and Chelsea led the move to stop VAR being used in the Premier League.

The idea was rejected yesterday at a meeting of the league’s 20 clubs.

“I think Manchester City agreed to it but the other top teams, United and Chelsea, didn’t want it,” said the Etihad boss.

“It’s OK, it will happen though. Not just in England, all around the world, the referees must be helped. Today the football is quicker.”

There have been a series of problems with the video ref system, which was being tested in English cup competitions.

The experiment will continue next season with more VAR games in cup competitions.

It will be in use for the World Cup in Russia.
