Brits fear fish stocks will be plundered after leaving EU
MILLIONS of Brits are demanding new laws to protect our oceans from overfishing after Brexit.
Some 82% want to see bigger fines for illegal trawling.
And more than half (55%) 0think the Government’s fishing priority in Brexit talks should be protecting stocks.
But only 26% said ministers should prioritise getting UK trawlermen a bigger share, said the poll for charity ClientEarth. When the UK leaves the EU, it will also quit the Common Fisheries Policy, which governs management of stocks. Environment Secretary Michael Gove has promised a “more competitive, profitable and sustainable” fishing policy after Brexit. But ClientEarth’s Amy Hill said: “People want strong laws to ensure we fish in a way the ocean can support.”
