Rings set for charity shop sell for £70k

- BY YASMIN HARISHA

TWO rings found in a box of items that were destined for a charity shop have sold for a total of £70,000.

Valuer Gareth Wasp was called in by a woman who told him the rings, left to her by her mother-in-law, “weren’t worth anything” and should go to charity.

But they were a rare four-carat Cartier diamond ring that sold for £42,000 and an “absolutely stunning” sapphire ring that fetched £28,000.

Gareth, 35, of Cooper and Tanner auctioneers in Standerwick, Somerset, said the woman seller did not want to be named.

When he rang her after the sale she was “absolutely gobsmacked”.

He added: “This has been the highlight of my career, it has been absolutely amazing.”
