Sevens up for Bronze

- FROM ALEX SPINK

ENGLAND’S rugby teams came up short in their bid to go one better than the silver Team GB won in the Rio Olympic sevens.

The men and women lost semi-finals to eventual winners New Zealand before bouncing back to claim bronze medals.

England’s men came from 14-0 down to beat South Africa 21-14 and pick up their first Commonwealth medal since silver in 2006.

Lydia Thompson (above), Deborah Fleming and Claire Allan scored to steer the women past Canada 24-19.

There was silver for Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho in mixed doubles table tennis, and for Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller in the men’s squash doubles.
