Wed start to English gold rush

GOLDEN couple Chris and Gabby Adcock led England’s badminton team to their best Commonwealth medal haul for 16 years.

The husband and wife partnership (above) beat team-mates Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith to retain their mixed doubles badminton title.

Ellis then returned to the court to win the men’s doubles with Chris Langridge, beating Indian opposition in straight sets.

In all there were six badminton medals for England, but the Adcocks’ achievement was most notable given that Gabby had been restricted by an ankle injury she sustained in January to just one week of full training before the Games.

She said: ”I like to come into tournaments feeling prepared, but to have pretty much a week to prepare – this has exceeded my expectations.”
