Ex-cops in Lawrence probe ‘facing misconduct charges’

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

FOUR ex-detectives could face criminal charges over the botched Stephen Lawrence murder inquiry, it was claimed.

A National Crime Agency probe reportedly found they were so negligent that misconduct in public office charges were possible. The offence carries a maximum life sentence.

However senior inquiry figures are said to believe there was no serious compromise of the Metropolitan police by Clifford Norris, gangster father of David, convicted for the racist stabbing in Eltham, South East London, on April 22 1993. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said the four-year probe by the NCA on its behalf was “not over and there are lines of inquiry that remain for us to pursue”. The reports came as Stephen’s father Neville, 76, said he has forgiven the killers and plans to spend the anniversary in church.
