BGT’s filling in fun sarnie

- IANHYLAND

If you find Britain’s Got Talent a little too staged and clinical at times, you might not have been that excited about its return to business as usual at the weekend.

So fair play to ITV’s schedulers. Saturday night’s entertainment sandwich saw Simon Cowell’s overprocessed meat slapped in between a couple of slices of the lightest, fluffiest bread they could find.

Harry Hill’s Alien Fun Capsule and The Keith and Paddy Picture Show are the most gloriously silly programmes on TV right now.

I had feared Harry’s return to the traditional TV Burp early evening slot might mean Fun Capsule’s more bizarre elements would be toned down for a mainstream audience. Yeah, right. If anything he’s made it dafter – and all the better for it.

As for Keith and Paddy’s Hollywood spoofs, they picked the right movie to kick off series two – Grease.

As with their first effort, Dirty Dancing, it was the little things that made me laugh the most. Paddy obsessively stroking his Danny Zuko quiff was basically this year’s Patrick Swayze swigging from a beer bottle – and his John Travolta walk looked worryingly well-practised.

Paddy and Keith were totally overshadowed by the ladies, though. Stacey Solomon as Frenchie was inspired casting while Nicole Scherzinger displayed more comic timing and wit in one 60-second cameo than Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne managed in an entire series of The X Factor last year.

So, obviously, she’s the judge Simon has decided to ditch this year.
