Star Conchita goes public on HIV condition
EUROVISION winner Conchita Wurst says she is HIV-positive and has been having treatment for “several years”.
The Austrian singer, 29, had intended to keep the information private but said an ex-boyfriend had “threatened to go public”.
She wrote on Instagram: “I will not give anyone the right to frighten me and influence my life. Coming out is better than being outed by a third party.”
Wurst, who won Eurovision in 2014, said treatment had suppressed the virus so much it could no longer be detected in her blood and could not be passed on.
She added: “I hope to give others courage against the stigmatization of people with HIV.”
