Star of Full Metal Jacket is dead at 74
AMERICAN actor R. Lee Ermey, known for his Golden Globe-nominated role as an intimidating drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket, has died.
His manager Bill Rogin said that the 74-year-old passed away on Sunday due to complications from pneumonia.
He tweeted: “It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (‘The Gunny’) passed away this morning.
“He will be greatly missed by all of us.”
Ermey served for 11 years as a marine, including 14 months in Vietnam, before he was discharged in 1972.
He then had a film career playing military men such as Sgt Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.
