Go slow plea as Marathon set to hit 23C
RUNNERS in tomorrow’s London Marathon have been ordered to go slow in what could be the hottest race ever.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 23C, topping the 22.2C in 1996 and 2007 when runners were “dropping like flies” and one 22-year-old later died.
Organisers have ordered extra bottles of water and set up six shower stations to cool runners.
Medical director Sanjay Sharma emailed competitors: “Listen to your body. If you feel thirsty, drink water. If you feel overly tired, slow down.”
Particularly at risk are nearly 100 of the record 54,000 runners attempting Guinness world records dressed in hot and heavy fancy dress.
