Nervous soldiers of the Lancashire Fusiliers are packed aboard a boat bound for the Allied landings at Cape Helles on Turkey’s Gallipoli peninsula the following day. The gallantry shown by the regiment’s 1st Battalion led to the famous ‘Six Before Breakfast’ awards where half a dozen of its members were honoured with a Victoria Cross for bravery on the first day of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign. Seven hundred of the regiment were killed or wounded trying to capture the heavily fortified beachhead.
