CABBAGE PATCHY
Greens shortage after a cold and wet winter
A THREE-WEEK greens shortage could hit stores this summer as months of bad weather lead to a poor harvest, farmers fear.
Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli may struggle after a cold and wet winter in growing areas.
Courgettes could also be in short supply after planting was set back a month following the recent heavy rain and snow.
Greville Richards of Southern England Farms in Leedstown, Cornwall, one of the country’s biggest suppliers, said: “We’ve had months of heavy rain with very few dry days. The ground has not had a chance to recover.
“Cauliflowers went in late and the spring greens were disastrous.
“Spanish growers can’t fill the gaps because when it gets to June and July it’s too hot there.”
The problems were also being felt in growing areas of Scotland and Lincolnshire.
Moss could become the next superfood after scientists at the University of Adelaide, Australia found it contains a gut-friendly carbohydrate that lowers cholesterol, much like the fibre in oats.
