Today’s picture shows hundreds of members of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement marching through Ardwick Green in Manchester to protest against the means test for unemployme­nt relief. The group was founded by the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1921 to highlight the plight of the unemployed after the First World War and during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Labour Party and trade unions offered little in the way of support to the legions of unemployed workers during this period.
