Boxing dopes must be KO’d

-

ONE of the most brutal knockouts I have seen from ringside occurred on the Anthony Joshua-Joseph Parker undercard.

David Price was already out on his feet and defenceless when Alexander Povetkin sent his head thumping into the canvas with a left hook.

Povetkin is now the mandatory challenger for Anthony Joshua’s WBA belt.

Povetkin has also failed two drugs tests.

He somehow escaped a suspension for testing positive for meldonium in May 2016.

But he, initially, received a lifetime ban from the WBC after testing positive for ostarine, ahead of a bout with Bermane Stiverne in December of that year.

Incredibly, Johann Duhaupas stepped in to fight Povetkin in a non-sanctioned bout that night and was brutally knocked out in the sixth round.

Ostarine is a drug that helps stamina and fitness.

On appeal, Povetkin’s WBC ban was reduced to one year.

Over the past few days, both Tony Bellew and Billy Joe Saunders have said boxing will not take doping seriously until someone dies at the hands of a drugs cheat. Sadly, they are right. Thankfully, it wasn’t David Price. ANDREW STRAUSS says the 100-ball format for English cricket’s new competition is aimed at “mums and sons”. It has been a decent week for the Duchess of Cambridge then. PS: William cannot make the FA Cup Final as he will be making an inappropriate speech about Harry’s love life at his wedding reception that may go on for some time. Maybe one of the thousands of Manchester United or Chelsea loyalists being priced out of attending can have his ticket. WATCHING Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos smile his way through an interview in English after already doing several in Spanish and in his native German makes you wonder, for the umpteenth time, how British players would benefit from broadening their horizons.
