STEVIE GER Gerrard is No.1 choice to take over at Rangers

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

RANGERS have made Steven Gerrard their No.1 target for the vacant manager’s job.

Talks have already taken place between Rangers director of football Mark Allen and Gerrard’s camp.

Ibrox chairman Dave King was at Anfield on Tuesday and Kop legend Gerrard watched Rangers face Celtic

in March. Gerrard must now decide if he is ready to leave his Anfield coaching apprenticeship after just 18 months.

Sources close to the 37-year-old, who quit playing in 2016 to take up his role at Anfield, say he must weigh up whether he will get the backing he needs from the Gers board.

The Scottish giants have been hit by demotion, political in-fighting, and a slashed budget in recent years, but the prospect of managing such a huge club is tempting the former England captain.

His decision may ultimately rest on the guarantees he has been offered, amid suggestions that the Ibrox board are ready to spend big to allow their new manager to challenge Celtic for Scottish domination.
