WIJN: WE’LL HAVE NO FEAR IN ROME

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

JURGEN KLOPP told his young team they almost blew their Champions League dream by showing far too much respect and fear at Manchester City.

And Gini Wijnaldum has promised Liverpool will not make the same mistake again as they head into another arena that will provide the ultimate footballing test.

Klopp blasted his team at the Etihad during half-time, urging them not to be scared and the chances would come.

They did – to win the game – and Wijnaldum (above) said that has given them the blueprint for their semi-final showdown against Roma.

“I think we were too impressed and maybe a little too scared by the way they were playing,” he said, of that first half in Manchester.

“The manager said we just have to play our own game. If we played football, we would create chances.”

Now, they again take a three-goal, first-leg lead to Italy and the Reds’ planning has identified a Roma flaw.

The Italians scored three without reply to knock Barcelona out of the quarterfinal, and the same result would put them through to the final after the 5-2 result at Anfield.

“We have watched videos,” Wijnaldum said, of the Barca game in Rome. “I think, in that game, they showed they won’t change their style.

“They played with high pressing, trying to score goals even when they knew, if they conceded, it would be more difficult. I think they’ll do the same against us.

“They have to be aware we have good players up front, players who can score goals.

“We both play really attacking football – but we will have more chance with counter-attacks.”
