A GRIEVING husband said he was “shell-shocked” when he realised his wife was among those whose life was cut short by the error.

Brian Gough said his wife never received a letter to go for a routine screening in 2009.

Trixie later found a lump and a scan in 2010 revealed she had stage-three breast cancer.

Brian, 77, of Norfolk, said: “It just hit me and I thought, ‘Good God’.”

He said his wife of 56 years underwent an operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Trixie missed the marriage of her grandson as she was too ill and tragically died just before her granddaughter’s wedding. Brian said she passed away three days after Christmas in 2015 and the 76-year-old never once complained during her ordeal. Brian believes “maybe just maybe” his wife might have come through her first lot of cancer treatment and survived if it had been diagnosed earlier. He said: “I can’t express how sad it is. “I know we can’t be certain it would have picked up her cancer, as it may not have developed, or that she would have survived. “But it is possible.” GRIEF Brian with Trixie
