Lemon drizzle’s reigning as the nation’s favourite cake

-

THE Mary Berry effect has put lemon drizzle cake on top of a poll of our best-loved bakes.

The signature cake of the 83-year-old doyenne of TV cookery won 33% of the vote, with former favourites carrot cake and Victoria sponge lagging on 31% and 26% respectively.

But while eight in 10 of the people surveyed told cleft palate charity Smile Train they preferred home-made treats to supermarket bought versions, fewer than one in four said they baked regularly.

One in five only got the cake tins out for special occasions and four in 10 admitted that they never baked.

Ian Vallance, the fundraising director with Smile Train UK, said: “From these survey results it is great to see that we Brits still cherish a home-baked cake – and that British classics such as the lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge are still relished.”

TOP 10 CAKES: 1 Lemon drizzle, 33%; 2 Carrot cake, 31%; 3 Victoria sponge, 26%; 4 Chocolate cake, 25%; 5 Red velvet, 17%; 6 Angel cake, 15%; 7 Banana loaf, 12%; 8 Cheesecake, 10%; 9 Madeira, 7%; 10 Battenburg, 6%.
