LEAGUE MOURNS TWO LEGENDS

- BY GARETH WALKER

RUGBY LEAGUE is in mourning following the death of two iconic players, Cliff Watson and Charlie Stone.

Watson, a fearsome forward who was 78, had been battling cancer for several years in Australia, where he finished his glittering career with Cronulla.

A member of the last Great Britain side to win the Ashes against Australia in 1970, Watson (right) made 373 appearances for St Helens, twice winning the Challenge Cup. Stone (left), who was 67, was also a towering forward. He won Challenge Cups with Featherstone Rovers and Hull FC and was revered at both clubs. Stone played 262 times for Rovers and 188 times for the Black and Whites, making one England appearance in 1975.
