Andy set for one Hull of a big future

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

AMID all the bugles blowing for Liverpool’s symphony of a front three, it was easy to overlook a less brassy, but just as impressive display.

Andy Robertson has come a long way in 12 months, but here in the Stadio Olimpico he suggested his journey is still only in its early stages.

Quite how an unheralded defender, who was relegated at Hull last term, could perform like this in the semi-final of the Champions League is one of the biggest questions of this incredible season for the Reds.

He was outstanding, full of energy and aggression down the left side he patrolled like an elite fighting force, but also confident in his passing and assured on the ball, defying his humble beginnings.

This time five years ago, Robertson (celebrating above) was at Scottish Division Three Queen’s Park, losing a play-off game at home to Peterhead. It is a story you don’t hear any more, with their gilded academies and million-dollar kids.

Yet, that toughness of character allowed someone who wasn’t even near the Liverpool team in November, to develop into one of his side’s most reliable performers last night – suggesting his incredible rise to the top is far from complete.
