There can be no hope for peace in Israel and Palestine unless both sides, and their supporters, change their mindsets.
If Israel was genuinely interested in peace, it would have rejected Trump’s offer to move the USA Embassy to Jerusalem.
It would stop building in the occupied territories, stop discriminating against the Palestinians, stop using excessive force against protesters and remove the embargo on Gaza.
Unless Israel is prepared to give every Palestinian the vote, they must negotiate for a real two-state solution, including the division of Jerusalem.
For their part, the Palestinians must stop calling for the destruction of Israel in a Holy War and they need to realise that violence won’t solve their predicament.
They also need to accept that the two-state solution is the only option they have for self-determination. Iranian support for Hamas and the USA’s pro-Israeli bias only add to the
problem. The move by President Trump to base the US Embassy in Jerusalem is the act of a madman and is beyond human decency. And yet he talks of peace.
Trump has the blood of the Palestinians on his hands and this country must denounce his actions in the strongest possible terms. Valerie Ashenden Weymouth Dorset
There was bound to be trouble with the US moving its embassy to Jerusalem, especially on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel, which is also Nakba Day, or Catastrophe Day, for Palestinians. It might have sounded like a good idea, but with planned protests anyway, this was only adding more fuel. Angie Willems, Coventry Palestinians need to stop trying to illegally cross the border into Israel. Also, several other countries are also considering moving their embassies to what should be Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. Neil Brown Cleethorpes, Lincs Why doesn’t the world wake up to what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians – denying them the basic right to a decent life? Mick Smith Tilbury, Essex
