I REGRET WHAT I SAID TO MY EX

-

Dear Coleen

Recently, my girlfriend wouldn’t admit to something she’d done and I lost my temper and said some hurtful things.

Now I keep begging her to take me back, but she says my words were “too hurtful to forget”.

I realise now that I shouldn’t have been so harsh, but I think it was because I’d been patient with her for a long time and ignored what was going on, and I kind of just exploded. What should I do?

Coleen says This is the problem with speaking in anger – you can’t take back those words and she can’t pretend she didn’t hear them. I don’t know what you said, but it was enough for her to end your relationship.

All you can do is give her some time and space to think about it.

And perhaps explain (in an email if not face to face) why you flew off the handle the way you did. Tell her you should have confronted the issues in your relationship sooner so it didn’t get to the point where it all came out in anger.
