GEORDIE IS SO SURE

- BY GARETH WALKER

GEORDIE Chris Thorman steered Huddersfield to a third straight win in his home town as he prepares to hand over the coaching reins to Simon Woolford.

Caretaker boss Thorman – born a mile from St James’ Park – has held the fort for nine matches after Rick Stone’s dismissal, winning five points and reaching the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.

His side withstood a second-half rally from Trinity before holding firm for a crucial win as Woolford awaits his visa.

Asked to assess his time in charge, Thorman (below) said: “I’d give it a six out of 10 – could do better.

“But with what we’ve had to deal with, I think we’ve done as well as expected.

“There were a lot of things to take into account and I’ve given five debuts to academy products that will stand the club in good stead.”

The Giants looked in control when tries for Aaron Murphy, Adam O’Brien and Jake Mamo put them 18-0 up.

But a Matty Ashurst response got Trinity back in the contest and they stormed back after the break.

Darnell McIntosh’s effort kept Huddersfield’s noses in front, but two tries from Ben Jones-Bishop and a late score from Reece Lyne set up a grandstand finish that ended when Liam Finn missed touch with a last-minute penalty.

Trinity coach Chris Chester said: “That just typified us at the moment. “From the 30th minute to the 80th we were the better side, but you can’t give a team 18 points start.”
